Family vacations are nothing new, but many groups are now planning trips with their loved ones that go beyond their immediate clan. More and more people are searching for travel experiences that can bring them closer to their family and friends, and they are willing to experiment with different kinds of travel to find the ultimate getaway.

Travelers want quality family time

One of the major things travelers are looking for in their trips is the opportunity to spend lots of time with their companions as they make memories. At the heart of these vacations is an unforgettable experience – think viewing the Northern Lights in Iceland or taking a camping trip in Canada – that families can enjoy together.

Many of these travelers choose to plan vacations around major events or milestones. For instance, they'll organize trips to celebrate a birthday or anniversary, meet up for a family reunion or head out for a wedding – anything that can unite all of the participants around a special occasion.

"We're seeing a spike in enquiries and bookings from moms and dads, particularly those with teenage children, who are looking for the type of holiday that enables them to reconnect as a family, away from the daily grind," Patrick Coyle, sales director for the tour operator The Mighty Fine Company, told Breaking Travel News. "These customers are looking for something that's different from the traditional family holiday where children and parents often end up doing their own thing."

Spending time together is a wonderful advantage of travel, and taking a family vacation is among best ways to get closer to the ones you love. This doesn't have to be restricted to just your immediate family, either, and many globetrotters are using vacations as a means to spend time with more distant relatives.

Multigenerational vacations

Another trend taking hold in the travel community is the concept of families embarking on multigenerational trips. Instead of just setting out as a couple or with immediate family, people are rounding up parents, aunts, uncles, cousins and other members of their extended family to form a large group that's ready for an adventure.

While taking a trip with members of your extended family may seem like a great idea, it does require some extra effort on the part of the travel planner. The people who take part in the vacation may be flying to a destination from many different locations and will likely have a variety of needs that need to be met, and it can be difficult to balance all of these desires as you plan a trip.

"Multigenerational travel creates a challenging level of complexity in coordinating schedules, managing multiple departure points, booking additional if not adjoining rooms and more," said Lindsey Ueberroth, president of Preferred Hotel Group.

Cover everyone's needs

Managing itineraries and arrangements for a large group of travelers can be difficult, and it's also tough to find activities and attractions that appeal to every jet-setter. No matter what you decide to include in your travel schedule, you should shop around for the best travel insurance that can protect you and your family. There is a certain level of risk that comes into play when you travel with seniors or young children, especially with regard to medical issues, so be sure to purchase a Oklahoma City travel insurance policy that can offer you the support and coverage you need to have a safe and happy vacation.

Ultimately, a vacation can be a magnificent experience for everyone involved, whether you're bonding with your children or celebrating a milestone with the entire extended family.
