There’s a new fad that has started. I like to call it “the local fad.” Every mom and pop store has a buy local sticker on their window. You can walk into a corporate grocery store where they have started selling locally grown produce from local mom and pop farms. Honestly, I’m all for it, after all, we have to find whatever ways we can to support our community and all these stores can do just that, but it goes even further than that. Buying local is personal. They are, in essence, the American dream come true.
I am not sure my Grandpa thought he was participating in the American dream when he starting our family agency 50 years ago. I think at the time, he thought it would put food on the table and it did. When you think of insurance, you don’t think local. I am sure you think of a lot of things, but it is probably not even remotely close to what you think of when you think of Millers Grill which has been a staple of our little community ever since I can remember, but then again, perspective is everything. Independent agents are your cousins, your neighbors, your classmates. We are very much local and rely on local support as does every small business owner. We are actively involved in your children’s schools, PTA, or Rotary. We are usually one of your first calls when disaster strikes, not because we have your insurance, but because usually, we’re your friends.
So what is an independent agent? We are insurance agencies that are able to write through many different companies. Who might you ask are the other guys? In insurance lingo, we call them captive agents–they can write through their one single company that they represent. No choices, no options. In other words, they are captive to one sole company. As independent agents, we have the freedom to choose. We are able to place whatever risk you might throw at us with the best company not just because it’s our only option, but because it is the best company and value for you personally. We are able to mix and match our different companies to tailor it specifically to your needs. One size does not fit all, when it comes to companies, and some are better at one type of coverage than another. Some are more secure than others; some do better at adjusting claims. An independent agent can be a tremendous benefit in getting you the best coverage at the best price. We know our hometown and that knowledge helps us to see where you might be left exposed.
When you think of buying local, don’t just think of the little stores on Main Street or the local eateries. As you change, we change too and we want to help. We’re here too and we’re thriving so shop local.
